HtmlApp benefits
HtmlApp Studio packages collections of related project files such as HTA, batch files, graphics, etc. into a single EXE file.
An HtmlApp makes distribution of this package more professional than zip files
because you can
- assign your own icon
- control the window title
- run the resulting EXE file directly
- produce free-form, borderless windows (like a clock)
- code sign the distribution EXE file for authenticity and tamper resistance
- have basic security for most content
- run only from memory and not unpacked to the local file system
- unreadable by merely inspecting the EXE file itself
An HtmlApp can enjoy system tray support, install/uninstall, and automatic startup, all as easy as checking or unchecking option boxes.
Smaller than self-extracting Zip files
HtmlApp overhead is 14 KB vs. 100 KB for a popular self-extractor. Every complete HtmlApp example shown on this site is
smaller than the 100 KB starting overhead for a compression self-extractor.
Deploy HTA or HTML files
HtmlApp Studio specializes in HTA file support.
An HTA is a page rendered by Internet Explorer 5.0 or later but without any
of the Internet Explorer toolbars or menus. The look and feel of the
window can be customized and has been extended by HtmlApp runtime.
HTA files have relaxed security settings so that ActiveX components
can be used for system tasks (e.g. file system access) by your
JScript/VBScript/JavaScript code without raising security warning popups.
HtmlApp Studio can create an HTA to include in your project or
you may include your own. Alternately, you may open a page
in user default browser but now this page will have ordinary borders, toolbars, and menus.
An HtmlApp can contain the program icon and even be code signed, if you have a signing certificate, making your HTA distribution more secure and professional than distributing the HTA itself.
The built-in mini web server supports Html and common file types
so that you can run web pages on user computer and run in the
more permissive internet zone rather than the locked down
local file system (a minor mystery why this is so but Internet
Explorer).
Deploy batch files
CMD or WSH can launch other files and are a convenient way to expand environment variables and pass them to other programs. But running such a batch file leaves an ugly window on the screen.
An HtmlApp can run a program either visibly or invisibly. The invisible setting is perfect for deploying batch files.
Deploy other file types
Other file types you might find convenient to distribute in HtmlApp EXE format include MSI and REG. You can use HtmlApp to create a CD Auto Run EXE file that pops up with a menu.
Your distribution EXE file will have its own icon and by consolidating everything in a ready to run format will be more professional than a ZIP file with a readme.
